Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) are defined as behaviors and patterns created by inappropriate muscle function and incorrect habits involving the tongue, lips, jaw and face.

These may include tongue thrust (thrusting the tongue against or between the teeth during swallowing or at rest), thumb, finger, lip and tongue sucking habits, inappropriate tongue resting posture and open-mouth/lips apart resting posture.

OMDs may negatively impact dental eruption patterns, alignment of the teeth and jaws and functioning of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Speech problems, including an interdental lisp may also develop.

Client Testimonial

I can’t speak highly enough of Monica and Bodylink Speech Therapy! Working with her has been a life changing experience. She is an excellent speech therapist, an all around wonderful person, and whatever your goal or need is, she will help you get there. As a singer and performer it was important to me to find a speech pathologist who fully understood my needs in this area and had a similar background. I received all of that and more from Monica. I also love her holistic approach.
