Speech-Language Therapy
Speech Language Therapy
Speech-language therapy includes the evaluation and treatment of speech, language, cognitive and feeding/swallowing skills. Although the terms speech and language are often used interchangeably, it is important to understand the difference between them.

Speech is the physical production of sounds. It involves precise and coordinated muscle movement of the lips, tongue, jaw, larynx, chest and abdomen. Speech disorders include:

-
Fluency disorders (including stuttering)
-
Feeding/swallowing disorders including orofacial myofunctional disorders

Language is a symbolic, rule governed system used to convey a message. Symbols can include spoken/written words or gestures, while the “rules” of language include appropriate use of syntax, semantics, phonology, morphology and pragmatics. Language disorders include:

-
Receptive language disorders
-
Expressive language disorders

Although auditory processing disorder is considered an auditory disorder, language processing skills are usually affected and therefore targeted in evaluation and treatment.

Client Testimonial
I am a recent college graduate working in finance, and oral communication is the key for the success of my career. After many years of struggling with my speech, I decided to seek help and turn to Monica in order to save my job. I have been seeing Monica for 10 weeks now, and the improvement in my speech has been incredible. Monica has been able to discover some of the real issues in my speech, such as voice resonance. My speech is certainly more fluent, and my stuttering has almost phased out. Thank you, Monica.
