CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle and effective somatic technique that taps into the body's innate intelligence and potential to heal itself.

The CranioSacral system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the skull, face and mouth (which comprise the cranium) to the sacrum (tailbone). Cerebrospinal fluid is pumped through the membranes, creating a rhythmic pulse.

This pulse may be detected throughout the body and is particularly evident at the head, sacrum and coccyx. Restrictions in this system may potentially contribute to a variety of difficulties, including:

  • Motor Coordination Impairments
  • Central Nervous System Disorders
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD)
  • Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Migraines and Headaches
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Stress and Tension Related Difficulties

How CranioSacral Therapy Works

CranioSacral treatment uses light touch to detect and release restrictions, ultimately encouraging a state of relaxation and equilibrium. When the body is in balance, it is easier to participate in a targeted therapy program or in ones own healing process.

Initially developed in the early 1900's by osteopath Dr. William Sutherland, CranioSacral therapy continues to be researched and promoted today, most notably by the Upledger Institute. The work is used by orthopedists, chiropractors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists and massage therapists world-wide as an effective adjunct to conventional treatment.
